Finding success at work is no longer as simple as climbing up the career ladder. A career path is a journey, with twists and turns on the way. It is necessary to make changes if you want to get ahead in your career. But, how can you be sure that you are making the right move?

Career coach Marilyn A. Feldstein outlines how to manage a successful career transition in the highly recommended book Find Your Fit. The steps below can guide you through the process.

Five Steps to A New Career

  • Evaluate Your Level of Job Satisfaction

Before you decide to move on, make sure you understand why. Knowing what you want and do not want in a position will help you to find a better job in the future. Here are some of the most common reasons people are motivated to leave their job.

  • Limited growth opportunities
  • Better pay
  • Seeking more flexibility
  • Shifting values or interests
  • Work environment issues

“Reflect on what limiting beliefs and fears are stopping you from moving forward. You may feel anxious that no one wants to hire someone your age, or you have no interest in starting all over again from an entry-level position.” Picture: Freepik.

  • Let Go of What is Holding You Back

If you sincerely want to make a change, then why haven’t you done it yet? Reflect on what limiting beliefs and fears are stopping you from moving forward. You may feel safe and comfortable in this job, or feel anxious that no one wants to hire someone your age, or you have no interest in starting all over again from an entry-level position. It is time to put these excuses to rest and acknowledge your need for change.

  • Consider Your Options and Do the Research

Do you want to move into a new career, a new field or a new environment? May you want to transition from a corporate environment to working at a non-profit or spend less time in front of a  computer. Identify what job you are looking for and then find out more. Gain insight into a career or industry by conducting informational interviews and job shadowing.

  • Leverage Your Work Experience

Assess your skills – many of them may be transferable and useful in your new dream job. Compare your skills with job descriptions that are aligned with your career aspirations. Revise your resume to highlight your transferable skills with the terminology used in your new field.

  • Upgrade Your Skills

Don’t be discouraged if you are missing a few skills. You can develop new skills within your current role by offering to take on tasks that would help you gain valuable skills for the future.
